26 November – 1 December, 2024

Lund, Sweden

The “Routes of Resistance” Lund exhibition has been successfully completed leaving us grateful and inspired. The preparatory activities  brought us closer, sharing beautiful moments in the Scandinavian forest, hosted at the picturesque Hedlandet Residency. The week long meeting has offered an opportunity for deep exchange and engagement in the process of a collective curatorial work that was finally showcased at Skissernas Museum of Artistic Process and Public Art.

Initiated and coordinated by Fredrik Elg from SH|FT, curators Sofía Carillo Herrerias, Dr Kara Blackmore, Helga Reiner, Bonita Bennett and Khaled Barakeh presented selected artworks from local exhibitions that all took place earlier in 2024, with numerous participating artists from Mexico, Uganda, South Africa and Germany. The works and subsequent reflections were a timely opportunity for exchanges, not only over the challenges faced by artists or the obstacles imposed on artistic freedom in different regions of the world but also over the meaningful way in which art raises social concerns and informs and empowers people towards active engagement.

Special feature of the Lund Exhibition, the participation of zine-maker Gloria Giconco, who shared her vision and practical skills in the very interesting collaborative artistic practise of Zine-making. Musicians Yasmine El Baramawy & Tina Quartey have escorted the opening moments of the exhibition followed by discussions between the curators and visitors.

Participating Artists:

Adam Broomberg & Rafael González, Adán Vallecillo, Amar Jamal, Anti Story – Reversed Image, Bastardilla, Charity Atukunda, Daniela Ortiz, Délmer Membreño, Donovan Ward, Elsadig Mohamed ‘Janka’, Ghayath Almadhoun, Gloria Kiconco, Goldendean Hutton, Halima Aziz, Hamja Ahsa, Hugo Kabeya, Imān Zanele Omar, Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck, John Keane, Levy Pooe, Liad Hussein Kantorowicz, Lindsay Petersen, Minenkulu Ngoyi, PH Joel, Phoebe Walton, Randolph Hartzenberg, Raphaël Malik, Regina José Galindo, Robin Canul, Ruangrupa, Saúl Kak, Shahidul Alam, Taring Padi Collective, Tinne Zenner, Vanesa Rivera

It has long been the practice of artists, curators, authors, and activists to oppose centres of authority and instead to centre their work and personal experiences. Motivated by these methods of operation, we have developed a modular installation that features techniques from Sweden, South Africa, Uganda, and Mexico. When combined, these variations raise questions on the idea of freedom in the context of artistic work.

This project is funded by The Swedish Postcode Lottery Foundation.
