A DYNAMIC VISUALIZATION OF NEEDS AND RESOURCES

The field of artistic freedom activism is very dynamic: there are evolving needs and many new and existing resources. But there are few individuals that have a grasp of the whole picture – thus we often duplicate efforts, fail to utilize resources fully, overexpand some resource areas and underserve urgent needs. To counter this, the map we present here offers an overall big picture of what we need, what we have, and, by extension, of the gaps that need to be filled.

We envision this map as a work in progress: It had its birth during the 2023 conference marking the 10 year anniversary of Safe Havens, an annual meeting of activists in the field and the artists whose rights we defend, and will be updated as the field shifts and develops. It will also serve as an instrument of accountability: as we go forward we will revisit the unfulfilled needs we have identified and will have to answer what we are doing to meet these needs. Finally, the map will help funders, policy leaders and civil rights organizations direct the resources available to them more effectively.

By its nature of abstracting the big picture the map doesn’t cover everything. For instance, it recognizes but omits details about geographic variations. Nevertheless, we hope it does serve a much needed purpose in offering orientation in a wide field and guiding the emphasis of our work as activists, policy makers, artists and case workers.
